Instructions for use:

Marshmallow is a medicinal plant with expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Chemical composition

The healing properties of marshmallow are known thanks to the roots and above-ground parts (flowers and leaves), and they are fully manifested only in the second year of the plant’s life.

Marshmallow root contains mucous and other colloidal substances, rutin, fatty oil, phytosterol, pectins, tannins, and vitamins.

The herb of the plant contains essential solid oils, mucus, carotene, vitamins, ascorbic acid, as well as calcium, iron, magnesium, copper, potassium, zinc. The main value of marshmallow is in the mucus it contains, known for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and expectorant effects.

Beneficial features

The medicinal properties of marshmallow are due to the mucous substances it contains in significant quantities, which is why plant preparations:

  • They have enveloping and anti-inflammatory effects;
  • Reduce cough, improving sputum evacuation;
  • They prolong the effect of anti-inflammatory medications prescribed as part of combination treatment.

A decoction of marshmallow roots in folk medicine is used in the treatment of inflammatory diseases of the urinary tract and kidneys, for gargling for sore throats and for washing the eyes for inflammation of the eyelids.

Also, due to its beneficial properties, marshmallow is used to treat diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and various inflammatory diseases of the upper respiratory tract: chronic and acute bronchitis, tracheitis.

Indications for use

The use of marshmallow is effective in treating:

  • Sore throats;
  • Tracheitis;
  • Diarrhea;
  • Gastritis;
  • Blepharitis;
  • Bronchitis;
  • Peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum;
  • Enterocolitis
  • Enuresis.

Contraindications

Marshmallow rarely causes side effects, so the only serious contraindication to treatment is individual intolerance. In the early stages of pregnancy (1-2 trimester), medications with marshmallow should not be taken; the question of their use in later stages is decided by the doctor.

Ready-made marshmallow syrup is recommended for diabetics to use with caution. When taking it for a cough, you should keep in mind that the syrup cannot be combined with codeine and other drugs that suppress the cough reflex, because this can make it difficult for the liquefied sputum to come out and cause complications of the disease.

An overdose of plant-based products may cause nausea and vomiting. In this case, you need to rinse your stomach and stop using marshmallow.

Home remedies from marshmallow

At home, marshmallow root is used to prepare medicinal tea: two teaspoons of crushed root are poured into 250 ml of cold water, left for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. After half an hour, the tea is shaken well and filtered, after which it is heated a little and drunk slowly, in small sips.

An important feature of using marshmallow root and herb is that infusions with the plant cannot be brought to a boil or boiled - the starch contained in it can turn into a paste.

You can also make a tea from the marshmallow herb, which is taken orally for coughs and gastrointestinal diseases, both topically and as a rinse. Two teaspoons of marshmallow herb are poured into 250 ml of hot water and allowed to brew for 10 minutes. To stimulate intestinal function and treat the gastrointestinal tract, it is recommended to drink unsweetened tea. When coughing, honey is added to it, and for diabetics it is recommended to use stevia instead of honey.

In pediatrics, the use of marshmallow for coughs is successfully practiced - the product is non-toxic and highly effective. Both ready-made marshmallow syrup and homemade syrup help. Syrup goes well with drops of anise - this remedy treats bronchitis and relieves a “barking” cough.

To prepare marshmallow syrup at home, you need to take 2 g of coarsely chopped root, put it in gauze, hang it, and substitute an empty container. The root in gauze is poured with a mixture of 45 g of water and 1 g of wine alcohol, the draining liquid is collected in a container, and the root is poured into it again. Repeat this procedure for an hour. To the resulting liquid, add 63 g of sugar and heat until it dissolves.

Marshmallow syrup for children over 12 years of age and adults is prescribed a tablespoon up to 5 times a day. Children 6-12 years old are given a teaspoon of syrup, children under 6 years old - 0.5 teaspoon. Treatment lasts 10-15 days. Before use, it is recommended to dilute the syrup with water: 50 ml of water per teaspoon of product.

Boiled leaves of the plant are a good external remedy - they accelerate the healing of wounds and abrasions. Marshmallow root can also be consumed raw – it is chewed to relieve sore throats. Rinsing with a hot infusion of marshmallow is used for inflammation of the tonsils and gums, and its cold infusion helps with inflammation of the mucous membranes of the eyes and skin.

The cure for everything

The name of the herb is found on the pages of the works of Theophrastus and Hippocrates. Pliny called the plant “the friend of the poor” because it was used to treat wounds caused by contact with sharp objects.

In the Middle Ages, Avicenna treated marshmallow with special respect - he ranked it among the herbs that lead to the resorption of phlegm. Doctors of those times recommended using the plant for all diseases - pain in the joints and stomach; it was used to prepare antidotes and even to facilitate childbirth. In Russia during the 17th century, marshmallow was actively used in military medicine.

Tops and roots

If many years ago doctors used all parts of the marshmallow to make decoctions, now its root is most actively used. Many studies have proven that the bulk of the beneficial substances are contained there. We are talking about vitamins, amino acids and tannins (these components, by the way, make it possible to use the herb in cosmetology).

But the most active active ingredient of marshmallow root is, of course, the heterogeneous mucus polysaccharide. It is this substance that is most often used in modern pharmacology to create drugs against coughs and diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. The ability of mucus to envelop in this case becomes the most important tool for therapeutic effects.

Based marshmallow More than 30 drugs have been created. These include drugs such as "Mukaltin", expectorant syrups, preparations, tea for the prevention of colds. Often, the powder of the root of this plant is used as a base for the manufacture of various dosage forms.
